How to Draw Anime and Manga Hair Female

So even though I sometimes draw hair quite detailed in the beginning, I do also check the major shapes regularly. These shapes give you the overall feeling right at the start. With these big blocks, you can easily see whether the hair works. You can also easily try different sizes and flows to the character’s hair. In this article, I will go through my experiences of how to draw anime hair and what I tend to look for when drawing it.

Step 1: Draw two lines

If you are going with a more realistic effect, you will find that layering becomes more of a strategy to achieve this aesthetic in your anime hair drawing. However, if you approach a more cartoon-styled anime hair drawing, you will then be more loose and vaguer with your hair formation. This means you can keep lines a little less smooth and organic by drawing them quite geometrically around the head of the anime character.

The first thing to do is to explore various anime hair references. Looking at anime hair references is going to help you gain an awareness of how different hairstyles affect the character. Anime hairstyles can range from realistic to cartoon- it all depends on what style you would like to draw your anime characters in.

Sketching tips

By “clean up”, I mean I will erase the messy lines and go over them when necessary, giving it a different feeling than a perfectly clean line. I feel this helps me relax about art and not worry too much about details. Depending on the drawing, I will clean up the sketch instead of creating lineart. It’s tough to draw things when you don’t check what they look like in real life.

I would say that the most important thing here is to think about the volume of the hair. The hair I drew was rather chunky, so the shadow also had to be quite thick. I have had this habit of drawing some awesome details in, just to notice that you can’t even notice the subtle detail you’ve drawn for minutes when zoomed out. You can break the flow of the hair by adding curls to the hair. The benefit of doing it this way is avoiding the so-called “undo effect” or regret phase.

For example, watercolor techniques, calligraphy and lately digital drawing, which is becoming more and more popular. Another way to do this is to be less emphatic with the lips, this way they seem more muted which is a common characteristic of male anime characters. Take your time working on the features of the male anime character. Some ways to give a masculine quality to the character is to make the eyes more square and the jawline more squarish. We can draw in some general directional lines of how the hair will fall alongside the character from her ponytails.

Drawing Anime Hair Buns

As this example also has long back hair you can again draw in some of it’s inner folds to make that section look more like actual hair. You can also make them a bit more wavy than the other examples to again make the hair look more messy. Now draw in some small splits into the front and side parts of of the hair to make them look more natural. Erase the line in between the splits when you are done.

This hairstyle can again be split into three parts with the front, side and back hair. The front section of the hair however is a little different from the previous examples. Draw the back hair split into tow curves that pretty much hug the shape of the head as they go down eventually sticking out in clumps to each side. For the hairstyle with hair over one eye you can yet again split the hair into the front, sides and back. In this style the front section of the hair will be fairly large and sort of merge into the “side hair” next to the covered eye.

It is very seldom a good idea to spend time shading a drawing you are not happy with. In fact when you draw, do not hesitate to make changes from the underdrawing if you see an opportunity to improve your drawing. Making sure we have a character’s face fleshed out will determine what type of hairstyle will suit the character.

This part is very fun, and there are many ways to add shine to the hair. To do this, lay out a general shape with the shading color. This tutorial has been almost completely redone and updated with new art but you can see the old examples below. Add some lines to show the heads inner curves and fold.

You will draw the underdrawing of the hair and identify where the head shape is as you do so. Before you get into complicated shading technqiues, try getting your drawings to a place where they are coming out to your liking first. If you want to learn about a few things you can implement in drawing right now to start improving more quickly, read my post about it here. However, you will see that the decisions we will be making in this step are more of a micro than macro level. You will most likely find yourself changing smaller individual shapes to be more aesthetically pleasing, and not changing the entire hairstyle. All of the underdrawings in the examples below are indicated in Gvaat purple for reference.

It was okay for me to do that at this stage because I knew I would replace these lines with better final line art. You can also try a final line art variation where you use a heavier line weight for the outline and thinner lines for definition inside the hair shape. I used procreate and an iPad pro to draw the face on a separate layer. The face is used in all examples here since hair is the focus.

Drawing the hairline will help you make sure that none of the splits between the hair clumps for the “front hair” go too far up. This tutorial illustrates how to draw anime and manga hair with twelve step by step drawings of common anime and manga hairstyles for a female character. As mentioned at the start of the tutorial, when it comes to anime and manga, hair buns are not as common as some other hairstyles. However, it is a very distinct style that can be interesting to draw.

You can also try giving your character a ponytail or braids if you like. When you’re done, erase the hairline, the outlines of the character’s head shape, and any other parts of the head and face that are covered by the hair. If you want, color the hair in and add some highlights.
